Low Vision

Solutions for Low Vision Patients

There is nothing worse than being told that, “There is nothing more that can be done.”   The good news is that in many cases help is available through low vision rehabilitative services.  Low vision devices can make the difference between giving up on life as it once was, to being able to function again.

Low vision can be caused by a variety of different eye diseases, including:

  • Macular Degeneration
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Rod-Cone Dystrophy
  • Glaucoma
  • Ischemic Optic Neuropathy
  • Stroke-related visual field loss
  • Trauma / Traumatic brain injury
  • Keratoconus / Corneal disease

Your initial visit will include:

  1. A discussion of lifestyle and specific goals.
  2. Detailed assessment of overall visual function in addition to visual acuity (how clearly you can see the letters on the eye chart).
  3. Exploration of low vision care options.

With appropriate training and adaptive devices, our low vision patients can often read, watch television, write, see their mail, and/or walk with more confidence.  Through a comprehensive low vision rehabilitation approach customized for their individual situation, many of our patients are able to maximize their residual vision and enjoy daily living.
